It's summer here in the Land of Oz. Blisteringly hot. Humid enough that you feel to be stepping into someone else's tepid bathwater when you leave the house. And yet it's dry. Dessicated, throat-parching, garden-withering dry. Last week, we had a day of rain that amounted to 17mm, the most precipitation of any kind that we've had in South Australia since May 2006.
That's why I'm estivating.
I've got air conditioning, food stores, books, the Internet, DVDs, and cable television.
Just as the bears and raccoons and squirrels in the northern hemisphere settle down into torpor for the long winter months, in their hibernation, so too do I become less mobile, less sociable and markedly less enthusiastic for anything that raises a drop of sweat during the long Aussie summer.
Wait for the autumn, though. Sunny days with a crisp refreshing breeze. Chilly nights, perfect for snuggling up under the covers. All the colours of fall. That's my kind of weather and I'll be up and at 'em, full of zip and energy.
